We are thrilled to celebrate Gérard Bertrand’s recent Master Winemaker of the Year Award from Drinks Business. The magazine has recently launched The Master Winemaker 100 Guide, a topnotch report that spotlights the movers and shakers of the international wine world. Gérard Bertrand topped the list for 2023, bolstered by his ongoing commitment to crafting wines of exceptional quality and character built on the ecological and holistic commitment to biodynamic principles. This prestigious award is the latest in a line of esteemed recognition for Bertrand’s insatiable pursuit of sustainable and environmentally-driven initiatives. In 2020, Bertrand was voted “Green Personality of the Year” by the Drinks Business Green Awards. While building better wine based on sustainable practices drives the brand, Gérard Bertrand’s commitment to world class wine is also revealed in such efforts as the 2017 Château l'Hospitalet Grand Vin Red, recognized by the International Wine Challenge (IWC) as the “Best Red Wine of the World” in 2019.
Born and raised in the South of France, Gérard Bertrand was raised in a winemaking family, and worked beside his father, Georges, in the vineyards and cellar since he was 10. After a successful professional rugby career, Gérard returned to take the helm of the family estate and launch a legacy of wines that has effectively put the Languedoc region on the international wine map. With a fierce focus on biodynamics, the vineyards of Gérard Bertrand are farmed with strict adherence to biodynamic principles. Healthy, energetic soils, sans chemical fertilizers and pesticides combined with minimal cellar intervention allows Gérard Bertrand’s balanced winemaking methods to express both the terroir and grape variety in purity of form and function. This passion for vineyard health and soil regeneration has spread throughout the Languedoc, thanks in part to Gérard’s trailblazing vision to pass the knowledge and practice onto other regional winemakers.
Today, Gérard Bertrand offers an extensive range of award-winning wines from the South of France in numerous styles at a variety of price points. From red, white, rosé, sparkling and dessert wines to single-vineyard, estate, and appellation specific bottles, there is a genuine commitment to produce clean, sustainably driven wines of quality, character, and value for every occasion.
